I have always loved the look of these two, but I am far from an expert on either. That actually means I would gladly receive any insight or advice from any of you that know a thing or two about either.

I need to decide which one I like more, and add it to to my list of that which I have owned just to give the list some variety.

1965 Mustang
1984 Dodge D50
1994 Ford Ranger XLT (first new vehicle)
1998 Land Rover Discovery
1963 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider
1989 GMC 3500 Dually
2008 Smart ForTwo (second new vehicle)
2003 GSX-R 600
2005 GMC Envoy

If you want classy sportiness, go with the BMW. If you want classy luxury, go with the SEC. If you want style, flip a coin and either one will do.

If it were me, I’d go the BMW route. But then again I’ve been on-and-off looking for a 635CSi/M6 for years. There is nothing wrong with a 560 SEC but it’s not as much fun in the twisties.

Both great cars, but the BMW will give you easier maintenance and would be my choice. I have huge experience with both, if you have any specific questions. In fact, I have an example of both in the shop currently, both customer cars.

The 560SEC is a good bit bigger and has a bigger, more powerful engine. At least i think so. The natural foe of the BMW would be the Mercedes CE 300-24

Definitely the E24. I’ve had two, and a Mercedes W124 (closest MB comparison), and the BMW will be far simpler to maintain—they are absolutely rock solid cars, and the M30 is such a brilliant engine. The E24 remains the only car I’ve gotten out of after a 10 hours drive and wanted to get back in and drive more. They’re just perfect cruisers in every way. Plus, there are so many small things you can do to make them look even better.

Would definitely recommend.

I might have one available in a couple of weeks or so if you’re interested. The oppo post confirming it’s purchase should be soon.

Even though I would say that I usually prefer the BMW over the Mercedes counterpart, in this case I would chose a 560SEC over the 635. Both are largish German 80’s Coupes, but I believe you can say that the Merc is a bit more of a powerful cruiser (and bigger) while the BMW is a BMW, a drivers car. One thing you should know though, Mercedes got its (former) excellent reputation for rock solid, top quality vehicles from cars like the C216, but as I said, both are fantastic cars.

The absolute most enjoyable car I have ever driven. That car was as nimble as it was beautiful.

Believe me when I tell you that I appreciate the input from each of you. I think we have a winner, and it comes down to the fact that I love to work on my vehicles. The multiple suggestions that the BMW is the one for a driveway mechanic has me leaning in that direction, as well as the “Joy to drive” factor. I’d love to take it down to The Murf, I mean Qualcomm, for a spirited track run on weekends, and just enjoy the drive to work each day.

Thank you all!
